Love Your Enemies

but as for me, I will sacrifice to you
with a voice of thanksgiving.
I will fulfill what I have vowed.
Salvation belongs to the Lord.
—Jonah 2:9

They call them the “Minor Prophets,” not because their work was less important, but because their writings are shorter. Easily read in one sitting. Yet, we can struggle to give them their due attention. Jonah is one of the more well known of these prophets. Undue attention is given to the giant fish that swallows him. But there is much we can learn from him. We don’t like to admit it, but we’re more like him than not. He is called into ministry and runs from that call. Literally. And God uses that giant fish to get him back on track. When we understand the story we can’t blame him. Those he was called to minister to were brutal enemies of him and his people. But at that point we start to get closer to the heart of the Christian faith. Jesus calls us to love our enemies as well. Easier said than done. If you’ve ever wanted to run from hard things, Jonah has a word for you. Even more, so does Jesus. He’d give his life for his enemies. And ultimately, they’d become his brothers and sisters. Have you pondered how much you mean to him?
